Borgward Cars History

Borgward Group - a conglomerate of enterprises from the German city of Bremen, which existed in 1931-1961.

It was formed by the merger of Hansa-Lloyd with Goliath, founded by Karl Borgward in 1928.

In the 30s. the main products of these factories were trucks and tricycles.

After the war, the corporation was divided into three formally independent companies, each of which had its own factories, dealer network and research department.

If one of the departments suffered losses, the others covered them from their own budget.

The group was represented in almost all market segments: prestigious 4 and 6-cylinder rear-wheel drive cars and large trucks were produced under the Borgward and Hansa brands, front-wheel drive 2 and 4-cylinder small cars and three-wheeled trucks under the Goliath brand, and the cheapest cars with two-stroke 2-cylinder engines - under the Lloyd brand.

Karl Borgward spared no expense in the development of new technologies and was personally involved in the development of each model, borrowing ideas from the Americans.

Having challenged all German automakers, he went too far in his ambitions and did not notice how his empire began to fall apart.

In 1961, the corporation went bankrupt as a result of a conspiracy arranged by competitors - BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Today, the Borgward brand was revived by Karl Borgward's grandson Christian, with the support of Chinese investors.
